“Have you seen the sunrise mommy?” Diana is five now and has never seen the sunrise. I smile at her, “yes many times”. “Is it beautiful?” she asked me. “It’s pink and sometimes purple and the birds sing.” I smile softly at her. “I want to see the sunrise” her eyes dreaming and thoughtful. My husband, Ryan, picks her up and asked “Why do you want to see the sunrise?” “I’ve never seen it” She answers simply. My husband and I exchange a knowing look.
I didn’t take her seriously at first. Diana woke up as usual around 7am the next day. “Mommy, I missed the sunrise. Why didn’t you wake me up?” I immediately felt guilty, as mothers do, that I hadn’t woken her up to see it. She looked so disappointed. “The sun gets up early, my love. I promise I’ll wake you up tomorrow morning to see it.”
That evening I set my alarm to 5am. I woke up, made coffee for myself and Ryan, laid out a blanket in our backyard and waited for the first signs of the sun rising. Once the sky started to turn that beautiful shade of pink, I went to Diana’s room and whispered in her ear, “the sun is rising”. She immediately gasped and got out of bed, wrapping her purple flower blanket around her small shoulders, she walked quickly to the backyard. I picked her up so she could see better.
“Do you like it?” I asked her. Ryan stood behind us watching, his cup of steaming black coffee in his hand. Diana looked into the rising sun, the pink and purple light reflecting on her smiling cheeks, “I love it!” She replied gently.
